Chapter Eighteen

# Chapter Eighteen

“What are you, Kat the matchmaker now?” Albus asked as he followed me.

“Oh come on, Albus. Did you see the way they were looking at each other? All I did was give them a little nudge. Emily and Jack are both great people. I want them to be happy. Both of them.”

“And what happened to ‘oh, he’s too young’?”

I shrugged. “He’s too young for me, but it’s not my decision. If Emily’s happy, that’s enough for me. People date with age gaps all the time.”

“Age is just a number,” Albus agreed. “You don’t wanna know how old I am.”

“Wait.” I stopped and stared down at him. Now that I thought about it, I’d found Albus — or rather, he’d found me — already full grown. I had never really pressed into his previous life. “How old are you? Are you one of those cats that live hundreds of years?”

“Wouldn’t you like to know.”

I was about to shoot a retort back at him, but a few choice words pricked up my ears and I stopped to listen.

“…if you ask me, he deserved what he got.”

I snapped my head toward the source of the voices. A small group of people huddled next to the mayor beside the large charcoal grill. The sizzle and steam made it hard to catch every word, but I sidled a little closer, hoping to hear more.

“We don’t need his kind around here,” the mayor agreed. He didn’t face me, but his voice carried well enough on a sudden breeze. “We can take care of our own just fine.”

I grabbed a plate and picked at a few of the snacks on the nearby table so it didn’t look like I was staring. My heart raced and my hands shook. I glared at Albus.

“He was only doing his job.” Another voice spoke up, but I couldn’t tell who it was. “The PEA has worked long and hard to stabilize human-magical relations. If he was right, and there really is a werewolf on the loose, all of Haven is in danger.”

The mayor flipped a burger and the renewed sizzle of fat drowned out his next words. I only caught the end of it.

“…Haven’s problem, isn’t it? Not the bigwigs in Atlanta….” Sizzle, sizzle. “…don’t know anything about us.”

I couldn’t hold it in any longer. I set my plate back on the table and approached, ready to give him a piece of my mind.

Another neighbor swooped in right before me. Rats.

I couldn’t hear their conversation — a young woman holding a baby, probably introducing themselves to the mayor or thanking him for the invite. They shook hands, talked a bit more, the mayor nodded, and off they went.

So much for that idea.

“What was that about?” Albus sounded about as dumbstruck as I felt.

“What does it look like?” I said grimly. There could be no mistaking it. “Mr. Mayor clearly has something against non-magical folk. And he’s not afraid to say it.”

Albus hissed. “He wasn’t the only one, either. That other guy agreed with him.
